How to fill your heating pads:
Choose your filler. Flax seed our favorite and we find in in the bulk aisle of our natural food store. It's much cheaper that way than purchasing it online. You can also use dried grains or seeds like rice, corn, wheat, or cherry pits. Once you choose your filler, open the hook & loop seal and using a spoon or scoop pour it into the bag. Doing this over a bowl or towel will help to catch any spilling. Fill your pad partially full, close the seal and work the filler into all parts, re-open and add more repeating as needed. We usually fill it around 2/3 to 3/4 full. This will help to be able to shape/mold it to your body or around your neck. If you overfill it, it may be too stiff.
You can also create an herbal heating pad by adding dried herbs like lavender, mint, rose petals or chamomile. Start with 1 tablespoon, adding more as needed. Some herbal scents can be strong so be careful not to add too much.
When you need to empty your heating pad, just open the seal, pour out the filler and shake outside to get any strays seeds out. Consider sprinkling your used filler outside in the yard it will decompose naturally or be eaten. Once your pad is empty you can wash it if needed. Machine was warm with no bleach. With the hemp fabric your pad will need to be tumble dried in the machine to help increase its softness. Hemp will get softer with age and repeated washing/drying.
How to heat your heating pads:
Flax seed is our favorite because of all the oils found in the seed, these help to keep your heating pad warm for longer. To warm your heating pad, its best to use a microwave with a turntable. Position your Heat Pad to fit in your microwave, make sure it can rotate freely. The amount of time depends on your filler, how much is in there, and how warm you want it. We suggest microwaving in 30 second intervals, checking each time until you reach your desired temperature. Please take care not to over heat, if microwaved too long just like anything else it can burn.
